NATURE EXPERIENCE, BIRDING At Nylsvley the Nyl River forms a 16 000 ha grass floodplain, one of the largest in South Africa. Of this area, 3 100 ha is protected I the Nylsvley Nature Reserve, and more in the neighbouring Mosdene Private Nature Reserve. Apart from the grass- and reed-covered floodplain, the vegetation in the reserve comprises mainly mixed bushveld, with trees such as silver clusterleaf, wild seringa, umbrella thorn and red bushwillow. A wide variety of mammal species inhabit this bushveld, and roan, tsessebe, reedbuck, kudu, waterbuck and vervet monkey may be seen. However, Nylsvley is best known for its birdlife, of which more than 400 species have been recorded. When the Nyl River overflows its banks during the summer rains, an outstanding habitat for waterbirds is created. Up to 12 000 herons of 17 species, 19 000 ducks of 17 species and an estimated 43 000 crakes flock to the vlei, and 85 of the 94 waterbird species known to have bred in southern Africa have been recorded here on the Nyl. Spring and summer are the most productive bird-watching seasons. Location: South-central region; south of Naboomspruit. Access: From Naboomspruit follow the N1 towards Nylstroom and after 13 km turn off to Boekenhout; after crossing the railway line watch out for the Nylsvley signpost on the left. Accommodation: A camping site with basic ablution facilities. Booking is advised. Other facilities: Escorted trips; picnic sites. Open: Throughout the year. Opening time: 06h00 to 18h00.
